Please don't think this in any way detracts from the book, the gripping storyline never lets up and as with all Dumas' books you slowly begin to appreciate that this is a morality tale on a grand scale. I'm sure Dumas didn't intend me to laugh out loud as I did at certain points but how can you not with lines like 'Pray sir, tell me more, for you excite my senses to their very limits.' Probably not an exact quote but I'm sure you get my point. Dumas wrote this around 1844 and as you would expect its very much in the narrative language of the 19th century. I think the only thing some listeners struggle with is the language used. It's just great storytelling with one of the most complex and compelling plots that I've ever heard. In a nutshell this is in the top 5 greatest books I've ever listened to and it was a sad day when I finished it. It's rare to listen to a book deserving of the word classic. I would take him any day over many other narrators who never make a mistake and never get caught turning a page. Big deal! He is a fabulous reader, and like many other reviewers, I felt like my kindly old (and very articulate and intelligent) grandfather was reading it to me. I loved listening to him, in spite of his occasional correction of a word, and a little rustling of pages. A word about Andrew Timothy, narrator: No, he is not the best narrator I have ever listened to, but neither is he the worst - far from it. Although I rarely reread fiction, I am sure this will not be the last time for this book. It was delightful to get to read it again. I read this book years ago, and loved it then. Yes, he plays God to some extent, but justifies that by the fact that he prays about what he should do, and because ways are opened up for him to accomplish what he wants,he believes he has God's blessing. He does so much good along the way, however, to those deserving of it. In Dante's case, he is well justified in seeking revenge, and he goes about it in a very calculating way. I really don't personally believe in revenge, but I think all of us harbor a secret desire to get even with people who have wronged us. It has quite a bit of darkness in it, but it is still such a great story of love and revenge.
